Why 700 for Walthamstow

The Boundary Commission reviewed the boundaries of Westminster parliamentary constituencies, following legislation in 2011 to reduce their number, and make them more equal in size. It reported in 2018. Parliament has never debated this review, and is now very unlikely to.

In a similar review in 2011, the Commission initially included a Walthamstow constituency, but later eliminated it. '700 for Walthamstow' aimed to get local people, appalled by this, to send written responses to the Commission. In all around 1000 were sent (though the whole process was stopped in 2012 when parliament voted to stop it).

2012 - (Old) News

The Boundary Commission started to propose new constituency boundaries in 2012, but the process was stopped when parliament voted against continuation with it. This was because the Liberal Democrats in the coalition withdrew their support. All the posts on this page cover this period and are for historical interest only. Some of the links will have expired.

  • More than 300 responses have been submitted with letter generator so far [ie Monday].
  • Deadline is next Monday - December 10th
  • LETTER GENERATOR is live - use it to help you write your letter; thanks to David for his brilliant work.
  • The Video is live - check it hereMany thanks to Sian, Lorraine, the whole team, and everyone who took part. Now spread the word!
  • We're making a Video - can you help?
To get even more Walthamstow people to write in and tell the Boundary Commission to change their plans Sian is organising production of a video; we need volunteers to take part in it. It's being recorded this Wednesday (21st) between 2pm and 8pm at a venue in Walthamstow [to be notified soon]. It will take about 30 minutes of your time. You'd read a script to camera, and it will then be edited it so that lots of different people are contributing part of the script. We'd like as many volunteers as possible, of all [voting] ages, colours, sizes, politics [or none] etc to show off the variety and community spirit of Walthamstow, so even more will tell the Commission by December 9th If you can help email philipch@gmail.com or text 07957 242221
  • Boundary changes - don't assume they won't happen!
The new proposals from the Boundary Commission will abolish Walthamstow, but don't assume they're not going to happen just because the Liberal Democrats in the coalition have rejected them following the failure of their proposals for House of Lords reform.

If you check the arithmetic Cameron can still get a majority if the other small parties in Parliament join him. See this recent article in The Guardian:
Tories turn to DUP and nationalists in attempt to revive boundary shakeup
Walthamstow's fate as a constituency could be decided by Ian Paisley Junior and Alec Salmond!
  • What the London Plan says
THE LONDON PLAN Spatial Development Strategy for greater London July 2011 is a large and very detailed planning document for the whole of London, produced by the Greater London Assembly, and the 2011 version is the current plan. You can read or download the index here, and the section Annexe 2 here covers London's Town Centre Network, which includes a large table listing every town centre in Greater London with a designation of its importance. As you can see from the screenshots below, Walthamstow is classified as Major, whilst Leyton and Chingford are simply Districts. You can find the entries on pages 281 and 284. And if you scroll down there's a map with a big blue square for Walthamstow - the only one in the Borough! (If you click on it it should enlarge.)

Walthamstow is the only Major Centre within Waltham Forest
